From West End-quality theatre to live jazz, quizzes, spa retreats and late-night dancing — entertainment at sea rivals anything on land. Here's your complete guide.

Entertainment on a Cruise: The Big Picture

Entertainment is one of the greatest strengths of cruising — and almost all of it is included in your fare. From the moment you step aboard, you'll find a packed daily schedule of shows, music, activities, enrichment talks, sports and social events running from morning until well past midnight.

Both Cunard and P&O invest heavily in their entertainment programmes. Cunard leans towards the refined — think West End theatre, classical music and world-class lectures. P&O keeps things more contemporary with headline acts, DJ sets, family-friendly fun and high-energy pool parties. Whichever line you choose, you'll never be short of things to do.

Think of your ship as a floating resort, theatre, concert hall, comedy club, fitness centre and spa all rolled into one — with the ocean as your backdrop. The quality genuinely rivals land-based entertainment, and the variety means there truly is something for every age, interest and energy level.

Theatre & Production Shows

The main theatre is the jewel of every cruise ship's entertainment programme. Both Cunard and P&O have invested millions in purpose-built theatres with professional lighting, sound systems and staging that rival West End venues. Shows run most evenings with two sittings (typically 7:30 pm and 9:15 pm) to accommodate both dinner seatings.

Cunard's Royal Court Theatre is renowned for full-length musical productions, ballet, Shakespeare adaptations and classical dance — performed by a resident company of professional dancers, singers and actors. P&O's Headliners Theatre takes a different approach, bringing aboard headline guest entertainers, comedians, magicians and tribute acts alongside its own production shows.

Expect 4–6 different shows per 7-night cruise, with new acts rotating throughout. On longer voyages (14+ nights), you'll enjoy an even greater variety, and you'll never see the same show twice.

Pro tip
Arrive 15–20 minutes before showtime for the best seats — especially on the first night when everyone is exploring. The front-centre stalls offer the best views, but the upper balcony gives you the full “West End” experience. Shows are free and don't require tickets on most ships.
№ 03

Live Music

Live music is the heartbeat of any cruise ship — and you'll find it everywhere, from intimate piano bars to the main pool deck. Both Cunard and P&O employ dozens of professional musicians across multiple venues, offering everything from classical quartets to high-energy rock bands.

Cunard is famous for its ballroom dancing in the Queens Room, where a full live orchestra plays waltzes, foxtrots and quicksteps every evening. It's one of the last places on earth where you can dance to a live big band on a sprung dance floor — and it's absolutely magical. P&O leans more towards contemporary live acts, with rock, pop and soul bands performing poolside and in the atrium.

№ 04

Enrichment & Learning

One of the most rewarding aspects of cruising is the opportunity to learn something new. Both lines offer extensive enrichment programmes, but Cunard's is widely regarded as the best at sea. Their “Insights” programme brings aboard some of the world's most fascinating speakers — former ambassadors, scientists, historians, explorers and authors — for a series of lectures throughout the voyage.

P&O takes a more hands-on approach with its Food Heroes programme (celebrity chef demonstrations and tasting sessions), destination talks and practical workshops. Both lines offer wine tastings, photography classes, language lessons and creative workshops.

Pro tip
On Cunard Transatlantic crossings, the Insights programme is especially rich — with 7 consecutive sea days, you'll enjoy a packed schedule of 3–4 lectures daily. It's like a floating university. Check the Queen Mary 2 guide for more on Transatlantic sailings.
№ 05

Daytime Activities

Sea days are where cruise ships really come alive. From breakfast until dinner, the daily programme is packed with activities for every taste and energy level. The ship's daily newsletter (or app) lists everything — and you'll typically find 30–50 events running on a single sea day.

Whether you want to be competitive (quizzes, tournaments, sports), creative (painting, crafts), active (pool games, fitness classes) or simply relaxed (library, cinema, sunbathing), there's always something on. The hardest part of a sea day is choosing what to do. See our sea day guide for a full breakdown.

Pro tip
The daily quiz is the most popular activity on any cruise — regulars take it very seriously! Arrive 10 minutes early to form a team or find one to join. It's a brilliant way to meet fellow passengers, especially if you're cruising solo.
№ 06

Nightlife & Bars

When the sun goes down, cruise ships transform. The bars, lounges and nightclubs come alive with cocktails, live music, comedy and dancing. Both Cunard and P&O offer a wide range of evening venues — from sophisticated whisky bars to full-on nightclubs with DJ sets and laser lights.

Cunard's nightlife has a more refined edge — the Commodore Club is one of the most celebrated bars at sea, while the Golden Lion serves as a convivial British pub. P&O goes bigger and bolder with dedicated nightclubs, themed party nights and poolside DJ sessions that keep going into the small hours. For a complete guide to drinks and packages, see our drinks packages guide.

Pro tip
Bars on cruise ships don't have a “last orders” in the traditional sense — most stay open until the last guest leaves (usually 1–2 am). If you have a drinks package, the evening bar-hop is one of the best ways to explore the ship.
№ 07

Sports & Fitness

Staying active at sea is easier than you might think. Every ship has a fully equipped gym with ocean views, a jogging track circling the upper deck, and a programme of fitness classes running throughout the day. Most gym facilities and group classes are included in your fare.

Beyond the gym, both lines offer a range of sports and active pursuits. Cunard is known for its more traditional options — including fencing lessons, paddle tennis and croquet on the deck. P&O goes for more contemporary thrills, with Arvia offering a zip-line across the top deck and both Arvia and Iona featuring multi-sport arenas for basketball, football and cricket.

Pro tip
The gym is quietest early in the morning (6–8 am) and during port days when most guests are ashore. On sea days, morning fitness classes fill up fast — arrive 5 minutes early. Running on the promenade deck at sunrise is one of cruising's hidden pleasures.
№ 08

Wellness & Spa

Every ship features a full-service spa with treatment rooms, thermal suites, beauty salons and relaxation areas. The spas are operated by professional teams and offer everything from deep-tissue massages to facials, manicures and hairdressing. While spa treatments come at an extra cost, the gym, fitness classes and jogging track are all included.

The thermal suite — with heated loungers, steam rooms, saunas and hydrotherapy pools — is a particular highlight. It's available as a daily or voyage-long pass and is one of the most relaxing spaces on the ship, especially on sea days.

Pro tip
Spa treatments are cheapest on port days (when demand drops) and during embarkation day sales. Many ships offer “sea day specials” — but book early as the best slots go fast. The thermal suite voyage pass is almost always better value than daily passes if you plan to use it more than twice.

Cunard vs P&O Entertainment

Both lines deliver outstanding entertainment, but they have distinctly different personalities. Cunard is the cultured sophisticate — classical music, ballroom dancing, world-class lectures and West End theatre. P&O is the contemporary entertainer — headline acts, DJ nights, family fun and high-energy pool parties. Your choice depends on the kind of holiday you want.

№ 11

Entertainment for Different Ages

One of cruising's strengths is that there really is something for everyone — regardless of age. Whether you're travelling as a family, a couple, a group of friends or on your own, you'll find entertainment tailored to your interests. Here's what each age group can expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is entertainment included in the cruise fare?
Yes — the vast majority of entertainment is included at no extra cost. Theatre shows, live music, quizzes, daytime activities, cinema screenings, lectures and fitness classes are all part of the fare. The main extras are spa treatments, casino gaming and premium experiences like speciality cocktail tastings.
Do I need to book shows in advance?
On most P&O and Cunard ships, theatre shows operate on a first-come, first-served basis — so arrive 15–20 minutes early for the best seats. Some speciality acts and intimate venue shows may require booking via the ship's app. On newer ships like Arvia, the app lets you reserve seats for popular shows.
Is there a dress code for the theatre?
There's no strict dress code for attending shows, but most guests dress smartly in the evening. On Cunard gala nights, you'll see black tie and evening gowns in the theatre. On P&O, smart casual is perfectly fine. You won't be turned away for wearing casual clothes, but you'll feel more comfortable dressing up a little.
What happens on rainy days or bad weather?
Cruise ships are designed for exactly this — there's more than enough indoor entertainment to fill any day. Theatre shows, cinema screenings, enrichment talks, quizzes, library time, spa sessions, indoor pools, the gym and dozens of bars and lounges mean you'll never be bored, rain or shine.
Is there WiFi for streaming on board?
Both Cunard and P&O offer WiFi packages, but bandwidth is limited at sea. Streaming services like Netflix or Spotify aren't practical — the connection is too slow and expensive. Instead, take advantage of the ship's own entertainment. Download content before you board if you want something for your cabin.
What entertainment is available late at night?
Plenty! After the main shows (usually 9:30–10:30 pm), you'll find DJ sets in the nightclub, comedy acts, live bands in the bars, casino gaming, karaoke and late-night bars open until 1–2 am. On P&O, the SkyDome often hosts late-night pool parties. On Cunard, the Golden Lion pub stays open late.
Can I perform or participate in shows?
Absolutely. Both lines host passenger talent shows, karaoke nights and open-mic evenings. Cunard's RADA workshops even let you take to the stage in a proper performance. Dance classes lead to social dance evenings. It's as participatory as you want it to be.
Is entertainment suitable for children?
P&O is the better choice for families. Ships like Arvia and Iona have dedicated kids' clubs, family-friendly shows, splash zones, teen lounges and supervised activities. Cunard caters more to adults, though there are children's programmes on school-holiday sailings. See our cruising with kids guide for more detail.

Ready to Book Your Cruise?

Now you know what entertainment awaits, it's time to find the perfect sailing. Compare prices across P&O and Cunard to find the best deals — and start planning your evenings at sea.
