Best Time to Visit
The Norwegian Fjords cruise season runs from May to September, with the peak in June and July. Midsummer brings the longest daylight hours — in late June you may experience near-24-hour daylight in the northern fjords, which is magical for scenic sailing.
May and September offer quieter ports and often lower prices, though temperatures will be cooler (8–15°C versus 15–22°C in summer). Waterfalls are at their most spectacular in May and early June when snowmelt feeds them. Browse Norwegian Fjords cruises on FareTide to find the right sailing for you.
Key Ports
Bergen — Often the first port of call, Bergen is a charming city surrounded by mountains. The colourful Bryggen wharf (a UNESCO World Heritage site) is the must-see, along with the fish market. Take the Fløibanen funicular for panoramic views — it runs every few minutes and the ride takes just six minutes.
Geiranger — Deep in the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, this tiny village sits at the end of one of Norway's most dramatic waterways. The ship sails past the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil waterfalls on approach. Once ashore, the Eagle Road viewpoint offers jaw-dropping scenery.
Flåm — Home to the famous Flåm Railway, one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world. The train climbs 867 metres through tunnels and past waterfalls — it's consistently rated as one of the world's most scenic train journeys. Book early as tickets sell out on busy ship days.
Stavanger — A vibrant port city known for Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen), a flat-topped cliff 604 metres above the Lysefjord. The hike takes around 4–5 hours return and is moderately challenging. If that's too ambitious, the old town's cobbled streets and wooden houses are beautiful to explore.
Ålesund — Rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a fire in 1904, Ålesund is one of Norway's most beautiful towns. Climb the 418 steps to Aksla viewpoint for a panorama of islands, mountains and the harbour below.
What to Expect
A fjords cruise is all about the scenery. You'll spend hours on deck watching sheer cliff faces, cascading waterfalls and impossibly green valleys glide past. The ship often sails through narrow passages where you can almost touch the rock walls — it feels intimate in a way that open-ocean sailing doesn't.
The weather is changeable. You might wake to mist and rain, then enjoy bright sunshine by lunchtime. That unpredictability is part of the charm — and why the light in Norway is so stunning for photography.
Onboard, the pace is gentle. Fjords sailings tend to attract an older, more relaxed crowd. Expect enrichment talks about Viking history, Norwegian culture and wildlife spotting. There's a good chance of seeing dolphins, sea eagles and, on northern routes, even whales.
Excursions & Activities
The fjords reward active travellers. Popular excursions include the Flåm Railway, RIB boat rides into the fjords, kayaking, glacier walks and hikes to viewpoints like Pulpit Rock. If you prefer something gentler, scenic bus tours to farms, stave churches and Viking museums are widely available.
Independent exploring is straightforward in most ports — Bergen, Stavanger and Ålesund are compact and walkable. In smaller ports like Geiranger and Flåm, ship excursions or local shuttles are often the best option since attractions are spread further out.
What to Pack
Layers are essential. Even in July, temperatures can range from 10°C to 22°C in a single day. Bring a waterproof jacket (not just a light rain shell — proper waterproof), warm fleeces or jumpers, and comfortable hiking shoes if you plan to walk any trails.
A good pair of binoculars is worth packing for wildlife and waterfall spotting from deck. Sunglasses and sunscreen are important too — the sun sits low and reflections off the water can be surprisingly strong. Don't forget a small backpack for port excursions, a beanie for cool mornings, and gloves if you're sailing in May or September.
